The Global Youth Commission for Sustainability
The Global Youth Commission for Sustainability (GYCS) is a student-led organization composed of high school and university students who work together to develop practical ideas, policy proposals, and projects that support a more sustainable future. The Commission provides young people with a platform to study environmental and social challenges, exchange perspectives across communities and countries, and transform their ideas into proposals that can be shared with schools, organizations, local governments, businesses, and the wider public.
Our work is guided by the belief that sustainability is not limited to environmental protection. Building a sustainable future also requires attention to education, public health, economic opportunity, responsible technology, social inclusion, community resilience, and the way cities and institutions use resources. For this reason, Commission members explore a broad range of issues connected to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, including climate action, clean energy, responsible consumption, sustainable cities, quality education, reduced inequalities, clean water, biodiversity, food security, and sustainable economic development.
A major part of the Commission’s work is the development of student-created policy and project proposals. Members are encouraged to identify a specific problem, investigate its causes, consider the people most affected, and develop a realistic response. A proposal might recommend ways for a school to reduce food waste, suggest a community program for collecting electronic waste, examine how cities can provide more shade during extreme heat, or develop an initiative that encourages businesses to reduce unnecessary packaging. Other students may focus on sustainable transportation, renewable energy, environmental education, water conservation, urban biodiversity, or the relationship between technology and sustainability.
We believe that young people should do more than discuss global challenges. They should have opportunities to research, propose, test, and improve solutions. Commission members therefore work individually and collaboratively on policy briefs, research-based recommendations, sustainability campaigns, community programs, pilot projects, and educational initiatives. Students from different academic interests are encouraged to work together. A student interested in economics, for example, might examine the financial incentives behind recycling, while a student interested in biology might study the environmental impact of the same issue.
The Commission also encourages collaboration between high school and university students. University students can contribute more advanced research and disciplinary knowledge, while younger students often bring new perspectives, strong community connections, and creative approaches to familiar problems. This exchange allows members to learn from one another while developing leadership, research, communication, teamwork, and project-management skills.
Ultimately, The Global Youth Commission for Sustainability seeks to help young people become thoughtful contributors to the communities in which they live. We do not expect students to solve the world’s sustainability challenges alone. Instead, we provide them with a place to ask serious questions, develop responsible ideas, and demonstrate that young people can contribute meaningfully to conversations about public policy and sustainable development.
Our goal is simple: to turn youth concern about the future into informed ideas, practical proposals, and meaningful action.
